Bob Dole, a former Republican U.S. senator from Kansas and the party''s 1996 presidential nominee, died on Sunday at the age of 98.

The Associated Press reported that Dole passed away surrounded by his family in a hospice in Washington, citing his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Robin as sources for the information. The cause of death was not specified.

Dole served five terms in the Senate from 1969 to 1996 before running for president against incumbent Democratic President Bill Clinton that year. Although Dole lost to Clinton in both the popular vote and the Electoral College, he won 19 states.

The Senate Majority Leader from 1996 to 1996 was known for his efforts to revamp the U.S. tax code during a presidential campaign marked by personal struggles and health challenges. In a statement announcing his retirement from politics in 1995, Dole cited both his health and family concerns as factors.

"After considerable reflection and discussion with my family and close friends, I have come to the realization that I can no longer fulfill the responsibilities of President," he stated.
